March 12, 2023 - Cape May
Gadget's New Panel and Interior

The weather wasn't the greatest today and it was a little cool, but that said, it was one of the better flying days of the week.  I like to fly at least once a week to keep my engine happy, so it was a go.  A few of us from Essex Skypark headed over to Cape May for a late breakfast.  Now that the Cambridge on-the-field restaraurant is closed, Cape May is probably my favorite.

Here I'm approaching Charlie in the "Chickenhawk", the 172 with a brand new engine.  Charlie had three friends as passengers.

Looking north at Dover Air Force Base.

Looking south at the Delmarva's "western" shore.

Entering an upwind for runway 10 at Cape May.  I was moving fast since I was descending from on high  -- it's good to be high when crossing the Delaware Bay -- plus I have been flying at 25 squared to break in my new, used cylinder.

Parked in front of the building that contains the Flight Line Restaurant, alongside Mark's RV-8.

After a delicious breakfast, Mark and I headed north up the Jersey Coast to do some sightseeing.

I wonder what one of those big beachfront houses cost?

Every time I fly the Jersey Coast, I look for "Lucy" the big elephant.  I saw it once long ago but forgot where it was.  I had thought it was south of the Ocean City, New Jersey airport.  Today, I had given up looking for it.  We passed the Ocean City airport.  Then I glanced out my window and there it was!

Close-up.  So now I know "Lucy" is north of Ocean City airport and south of Atlantic City.

Approaching Atlantic City.

Passing by old Bader Field.  I landed there once in the old Citabria with my mother-in-law Eunice.  We had flown in to gamble in one of the casinos for the day.  The airport closed years ago but it looks like you could make an emergency landing if you had to.  There is a baseball stadium on the grounds now.

The Caesars Palace here is not quite as tall as the one in Las Vegas.

Lynnette and I are going to have to stay in the Ocean Hotel/Casino one of these days.

North of Atlantic City, looking down at an undeveloped portion of the coast.

But then civilization begins again so we make a U-turn.

Checking out The Water Club Hotel and Borgata Casino.

A better look at Caesars Palace.

The Tropicana.

Lucy the Elephant from the rear.

After crossing the Delaware Bay, I checked out little Chandelle Airport (0N4).  It is privately owned but is a public airport.  I landed here once in the Citabria.  There are houses/hangars alongside the runway.

This pictures shows how close Chandelle is to Dover Air Force Base.  Chandelle is at lower right.

Passing by Dover Motor Speedway.

Back at Essex, everyone congregated in Chuck's hangar, watching him applying some finishing touches to his RV-7A.  Chuck put in a new panel, with all the latest Garmin avionics.  He also put in a new interior.  Big project.

Hanging out in Chuck's hangar.

Dorada the dog wants help finding her tennis ball.

Chuck sports an RV grin as he sits in his plane with new interior for the first time!

Hard to see the detail on the new panel.  Take my word for it; it's fabulous.

Nice!   I really should upgrade the interior in my plane.
